Free gifts with purchase are one of the oldest tricks in retail — and one of the most effective when implemented strategically. Unlike a percentage discount, a well-chosen free gift increases perceived value without eroding your margin. Here is how to set it up to lift AOV by 20% or more.

The psychology behind gift-with-purchase

Reciprocity is one of the most powerful forces in consumer psychology. When a brand gives a customer something valuable, it triggers an almost involuntary desire to give something back — in this case, a larger purchase. The key word is "valuable." A cheap promotional item has the opposite effect: it signals that the brand does not really value the customer.

How to structure your threshold

The threshold should be set just above your current average order value. If your AOV is $65, a free gift at $80 is achievable for the majority of customers who add one more item. A threshold set too high feels unattainable and is ignored.

<strong>Rule of thumb:</strong> Set your free gift threshold at 20–25% above your current AOV. Review and adjust quarterly as your product mix changes.

Choosing the right gift

The gift must feel genuinely valuable to your customer. The best gifts are:

Measuring whether it is working

Track two metrics: threshold claim rate (what percentage of orders cross the threshold) and AOV change. A successful program should lift AOV by 15–25%. If fewer than 20% of eligible orders claim the gift, re-examine the threshold level and the gift selection.
